Diflucan (fluconazole) is an azole antifungal used to treat fungal infections, especially those caused by Candida strains.

Candida is naturally found in and on the human body. When the body is unable to maintain proper balances -- due to a compromised immune system, prolonged antibiotic use, diabetes, organ transplants, or a range of other factors -- Candida can cause severe infections, which may be localized or systemic.

• Systemic Candida infections - 100 to 400 mg daily until resolved; highly variable in each case.
• Prophylaxis - 400 mg daily as long as needed. This treatment is typically used in cases which involve severe immune system compromise, such as organ transplants or chemotherapy.

Most treatments begin with a large "loading dose" at the start of treatment, to quickly achieve high levels of the medication in the body. Smaller "maintenance" doses keep levels of the drug constant; it also helps to take each dose at the same time each day.

In all cases treatment should be completed, even if symptoms disappear; in fact, it is quite normal for symptoms to disappear days or weeks before treatment ends, and in some cases treatment continues for several weeks even after the infection is undetectable in laboratory tests.

As mentioned above, patients are not advised to buy Diflucan to treat an undiagnosed infection; it will have little effect on some types of fungal infections and may even worsen the condition.

Adverse Effects

Common side effects are usually mild and not cause for concern unless persistent or severe:

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Unpleasant taste in mouth
• Upset stomach
• Diarrhea

The medication can cause serious adverse reactions in some individuals, which require medical attention. Warning signs include:

• Severe nausea or stomach pain
• Stomach pain that radiates to the back
• Severe itching
• Jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin)
• Skin rash, peeling or blistering
• Seizures
• Severe flu-like symptoms
• Unusually easy bruising or bleeding
